Named for German botanist Karl Friedrich (Carlos Federico) Reiche (1860-1929). Espinosa: “The species is dedicated to the memory of the eminent botanist of the Chilean National Museum of Natural History, Prof. Dr. Karl Reiche.” Local vernacular names: chuchampe, pegote, garito, leoncito (cf. Maihueniopsis leoncito).
