Etymology

Latin crassus ‘thick’ + Latin –spÄ«nus ‘-spined’. Apparently for the thick spines, although Ritter does not mention this characteristic. He does describe the spines of Maihueniopsis domeykoënsis as “thick needle-shaped” (“dick nadelförmig”) on the same page. According to Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) “for the strong spination”.
