Etymology

Latin cŏlōrĕus ‘colored’. Presumably for the color of the spines. Backeberg (Descr. Cact. Nov. iii: 14. 1963) not seen. Ritter (1980: 875): “The Latin diagnosis was drawn up by Backeberg with my author citation, without my knowledge. I had previously used the name as a nomen nudum.”
