Etymology

Greek akantha ‘spine’ + Greek ouros ‘tail’. For the “prostrate [stems], up to half a meter long, densely covered in spines” (Vaupel). Not for the “tail-like spines” (“schweifartigen Dornen”) (Genaust, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996).
