Etymology

Latin portŭlāca ‘purslane’ + Latin –fŏlĭus ‘-leaved’. For the shape of the leaves. A pre-Linnaean name for this species is Opuntia arbor spinosissima, foliis portulacae cordatis Pluk. (“Very spiny tree Opuntia with heart-shaped purslane leaves”). Linnaeus’s genus Portulaca included the species Portulaca oleracea (purslane), Portulaca pilosa, Portulaca anacampseros (= Anacampseros telephiastrum) and Portulaca portulacastrum (= Sesuvium portulacastrum).
