Lychnis (stem Lychnid-) + Latin –flōrus ‘-flowered’. De Candolle: “[The color of the flowers] is of an apricot yellow tending to the color of fire, and approaching that of Lychnis grandiflora [= Silene banksia (Meerb.) Mabb., Caryophyllaceae], which the flower of our plant resembles quite well.”
