Spanish bleo, the vernacular name of the species in Colombia (also used for several Amaranthus species).
The species was cultivated in the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia), where it was known as doeri pendjait [duri penjahit] in Malay and as tjeuli badak [ceuli badak] in Sundanese (C. van Woerden, Cactussen en hunne cultuur in Nederlandsch-IndieΜ: 43. 1939). The name ceuli badak ‘rhinoceros ear’ was also used for Opuntia maxima.
