Etymology

Greek leukos ‘white, bright’ + Greek stēlē ‘(boundary) post’. Translated by Backeberg as “white column” (“weiße Säule”). For the bright white, bristly spines and the columnar habit. Perhaps inspired by the name Cereus leucostele (1908) = Stephanocereus leucostele.
