Latin dēserti ‘wastelands, desert’ + Latin –cŏla ‘inhabitor’. For the occurrence in the desert.
Werderman spelled the epithet deserticolus, but epithets ending in –cŏla ‘inhabitor’ are indeclinable nouns in apposition (Art. 23.5, International Code of Nomenclature).
