Etymology

Leuchtenbergia (the only included genus) + –aceae, the suffix denoting a plant family. Louis Pfeiffer (Nomenclator botanicus, Vol. II, 1874: 96) attributed the name to Joseph zu Salm-Dyck (Allg. Gartenzeitung (Otto & Dietrich) 22, 1854: 1888), but Salm-Dyck only suggested placing Leuchtenbergia in its own family without mentioning, much less publishing, the name Leuchtenbergiaceae.
