Etymology

Greek leptos ‘fine, thin, small’ + Greek klados ‘branch, shoot’. Based on Mammillaria [infragen. unranked] Leptocladodae Lem. For the relatively thin stems and the offsetting habit?

This name is a younger homonym of the algal genus Leptocladia J.Agardh (1892). In 1954, Buxbaum published the replacement name Leptocladodia.

Leptocladium Broth. (1929) is a moss genus.
