Etymology

Greek lepisma (stem lepismat-) ‘peel, scale’ + Latin -ĭum, a suffix to form plant genus names. For the scale-like leaf rudiments around the areoles. Pfeiffer erected the genus for the species that were known as Cerei squamulosi ‘scaled cerei’.
