🌵 Basionym author(s) | José Mariano da Conceição Vellozo |
Latin crux (stem cruc-) ‘cross’ + Latin –formis ‘shaped’. For the shape of the stigma (Vellozo: “stigma 3-fidum, cruci-forme, et quævis lacinia iterum apice divisa”). Not, as Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) and Helmut Genaust (Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996) claim, for the “cross section” or “structure” of the stem. Vellozo spelled the epithet cruci-formis.
This is the correct name for Lepismium commune, the type species of Lepismium. See Mottram (Cactician 4. 2014).
