Etymology

Greek makros ‘large’ + Greek meris β€˜part’. For “the unusually large size of different parts of the plant, the tubercles, the spines, and the flowers” (Engelmann). Not for “the large perianth segments” or the long segments (“langgliedrig”) as Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) and Helmut Genaust (Etymologisches WΓΆrterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996) speculate. See also Epithelantha micromeris.
