Etymology

Greek lepis (stem lepid-) ‘scale’ + Greek anthos ‘flower’. For the “strange growths [on the plants] up to the size of a hen’s egg, densely covered with membranous scales, the tips of which protruded or were bent back” (Eichlam), which Eichlam first thought to be epiphytic bromeliads but turned out to be flower buds.
