Not explained by Coulter, who published a manuscript name by Weber. Presumably named for a Mr. Holl. Perhaps Swiss naturalist Friedrich Holl (1790-1870)?
The species is known in Spanish as compĆ©s and baboso ‘drooler’ (David Yetman, The Great Cacti: Ethnobotany & Biogeography: 129. 2007). Compare the epithet of the synonym Lemaireocereus bavosus, which is a latinization of baboso.
