Not explained by Coulter, who published a manuscript name by Weber. According to Joƫl LodƩ (Au Cactus Francophone, August 12, 2024) named for French cactus enthusiast Mr. Holl of Strasbourg.
The species is known in Spanish as compĆ©s and baboso ‘drooler’ (David Yetman, The Great Cacti: Ethnobotany & Biogeography: 129. 2007). Compare the epithet of the synonym Lemaireocereus bavosus, which is a latinization of baboso.
