Etymology

Greek lagēnos (stem lagēn-) ‘bottle, flask’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general (or perhaps Greek lagēnos, Latin lăgēna (stem lagēn-) ‘bottle, flask’ + Latin –ōsus ‘full of’ + Cereus). Named “bottle cereus” in reference to “the peculiarly shaped stem” (Doweld). Based on Coleocephalocereus subgen. Lagenopsis Buxb. (Greek lagēnos + Greek –opsis ‘looking like’). The type species, Lagenosocereus luetzelburgii, was described by Friedrich Vaupel as “[l]ageniformis” (Z. Sukkulentenk. i. 57. 1923).

The form Lagenosocereus was perhaps chosen over the more obvious Lagenocereus to indicate the affinity with Pilosocereus.
