Etymology

Greek pseudo– ‘false, appearing to be’ + macrochele. For the similarity to Strombocactus macrochele (= Turbinicarpus schmiedickeanus subsp. macrochele). Backeberg misspelled the epithet pseudomacrohele and that of Strombocactus macrochele as macrohele or macrothele, but the original spelling of the latter epithet was macrochele (Greek makros ‘long’ + Greek chēlē ‘claw’, for the long claw-like spines).
