Etymology

Greek ixos ‘oak mistletoe (Loranthus europaeus)’ + Cactus. This is not a cactus but a genus in the mistletoe family Loranthaceae. Rizzini (l.c.: 108): “A noteworthy fact is the convergence of the habit with the Cactaceae, verbi gratia, of the genus Rhipsalis“. Compare the English name mistletoe cactus for Rhipsalis baccifera.
