Latin taeter (stem taetr-) ‘offensive, hideous, horrid’. For “its thick and cylindrical branches covered with numerous and very long black spines, an exceptional fact in a genus of plants with a generally slender and delicate habit” (Areces: “sus gruesas y cilindricas ramas cubiertas de numerosas y larguΓsimas espinas negras, hecho excepcional en un genero de plantas, por lo general, de porte esbelto y grΓ‘cil”).
