Etymology

Latin turbĭdus ‘disordered’. Publication not seen. Presumably for the “jumbled up” (“durcheinanderragend”) central spines (Backeberg, Cactaceae 2: 1218. 1959). Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004): “perhaps for the variable spination”.
