Etymology

Latin chrȳsĕus (Greek chryseos) ‘golden’. Originally published invalidly as Haageocereus chryseus by Friedrich Ritter (Kakteen Südamerika 4: 1390. 1981). For the spine color, described by Ritter as “shiny golden yellow or paler yellow”. Ritter originally used the nomen nudum Haageocereus chrysacanthus (Greek chrysos ‘golden’ + Greek akantha ‘spine’) for this species, but had to change the name after the publication of Haageocereus chrysacanthus (Akers) Backeb. (1958) (= Haageocereus pseudomelanostele subsp. pseudomelanostele).
