Greek melas (stem melan-) ‘dark’ + Greek stÄ“lÄ“ ‘column’. For the “very numerous black spines” (“aculei numerosissimi, nigri”), which Vaupel called one of the defining features of the species (“Cephalocereus melanostele is clearly characterized […] by the one large and the many small blackish spines”). Not, as Helmut Genaust (Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996) claims, for the color of the epidermis.
