🌵 Type | Gymnocalycium gibbosum |
Greek gymnos ‘naked’ + Greek kalyx (stem kalyk-) or Latin calyx, calix (stem calyc-, calic-) ‘calyx’ + Latin -ĭum, a suffix to form plant genus names. For the naked perianth tube.
Originally spelled Gymnocalicium. A proposal to formally conserve the spelling Gymnocalycium was rejected in 1994. Conservation was considered unnecessary because Gymnocalycium could be interpreted as a “correction” of Gymnocalicium.
