Etymology

Latin rĕdūctus ‘smaller than usual’ (Backer, Verklarend woordenboek. 1936). Not explained by Link. Presumably for the “short spines” (Link: “spinae breves”) compared to Cactus nobilis L. (= Ferocactus latispinus), the only other species in Link’s subgeneric group “B”.
