Named for British nurserymen John and Charles Lee of the Hammersmith Nursery, London, who raised plants of this taxon from seeds sent from Argentina. Not only for John Lee, as Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) claim (Hooker: “Messrs. Lee”).
