Etymology

Greek oinos ‘wine’ + Greek anthemon ‘flower’. For the “claret-coloured” flower. Backeberg: “With the exception of Gymnocalycium Venturianum [= Gymnocalycium baldianum] the only species so far known with red flowers.”
