Latin nĭger (stem nĭgr-) ‘black’, in botanical Latin ‘black a little tinged with grey’ (Stearn, Botanical Latin. 3rd Edition. 1983) + Latin ārĕŏla ‘areole’ + Latin –ātus ‘possessing’. For the color of the areoles, described by Backeberg as “with thick white wool at first, later becoming quite black”.
