Etymology

Latin ērĭnācĕus ‘hedgehog-like’. Lambert: “This species distinguishes itself from the other Ovatisemineae [Gymnocalycium subgen. Ovatisemineum] mainly by the very typical spination, which is somewhat reminiscent of a little hedgehog; hence the name erinaceum.”
