Latin dēnūdātus ‘stripped, uncovered’. Not explained by Link & Otto. For the smooth flower bud (cf. Gymnocalycium), “the few appressed spines” (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) or the “naked apex” (Rümpler, Handb. Cacteenk. (ed. 2 – Rümpler): 584. 1886)? None of these characteristics are mentioned in the protologue.
