Latin fĕrōcĭus (neuter form of masculine/feminine ferōcĭor) ‘wilder, fiercer’. For the “much stronger” spines (Curt Backeberg, Kakteenlexikon: 168. 1966) compared to Gymnocalycium hybopleurum var. hybopleurum (= Gymnocalycium monvillei subsp. monvillei).
Originally published invalidly by Backeberg (l.c.) as Gymnocalycium hybopleurum var. ferocior [sic] simultaneously with Gymnocalycium hybopleurum var. ferox (Latin fĕrox ‘wild, fierce’) (= Gymnocalycium castellanosii subsp. castellanosii). Validated by Till and Amerhauser as Gymnocalycium mostii subsp. ferocior [sic]. Since the generic name Gymnocalycium is of neuter gender the original epithet ferocior is correctable to ferocius.
