Greek deinos ‘fearful, terrible, marvelously strong’ + Greek akantha ‘spine’. Donati: “The specific epithet is composed of the Greek word δεῖνος (deinos), meaning terrible but also amazing, and ἄκανθος (acanthos) [sic], meaning spine; it refers to the impressive, extremely sharp spination of Corynopuntia deinacantha.” Compare Melocactus deinacanthus.
