Named for Baltic German naturalist Privy Counsellor Guido von Schilinzky (1823-1898), a member of the Society of Cactus Friends (Gesellschaft der Kakteenfreunde) (Karl Hirscht in Monatsschr. Kakteenk. 7: 110-111. 1897). Schumann attributes the name to “Ferd. Hge.”, i.e. Ferdinand Haage. Hirscht seems to claim that it was given by Friedrich Adolph Haage Jr., but that was the name of Ferdinand Haage’s nursery (now Kakteen Haage). Friedrich Adolph Haage Jr. died in 1866.
