Named for German cactus grower Jörg Piltz, who discovered the species. Bercht & Schädlich: “The species is named after Jörg Piltz, who first discovered the plants. Piltz was a teacher until his retirement, and in the succulent ranks he is best known for many publications and novel descriptions, as well as for the Piltz cactus nursery in Düren-Birgel.”
