Etymology

Named for German cactus collector Fritz Schwarz, who discovered the species in the mountains of northern Sinaloa, Mexico, in 1940. Lindsay: “Since then he has had it growing in San Luis Potosi, and has listed it in his catalogues under tentative designation of Ferocactus schwarzii. It has been distributed to some European and United States collections under that name, but apparently has not yet been formally described. […] I am happy to be able to name this interesting species for Mr. Fritz Schwarz, whose explorations in Mexico have resulted in the discovery of many novelties and the rediscovery of more.”

Compare Echinocereus adustus subsp. schwarzii, which was also named (but not validly published) by Schwarz himself.
