Latin rōbustus ‘robust’. Not explained by Pfeiffer. Presumably “for the general appearance” (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004).
Echinocactus robustus Karw. ex Pfeiff., mentioned by Pfeiffer on the previous page, is a synonym of Ferocactus latispinus subsp. spiralis.
