Named for American surveyor and civil engineer Major General William Hemsley Emory (1811-1887), director of the Mexican boundary inspection. Engelmann: “I propose to name it after its zealous discoverer, who has, surmounting numberless difficulties, though occupied by severe and arduous duties, found leisure to do so much for the advancement of our knowledge of the wild countries traversed by him[.]”
The English name Coville’s barrel cactus is sometimes applied to this species, but originally only referred to Ferocactus emoryi subsp. covillei.
