Latin cylindraceus ‘cylindrical’. For the “oval or cylindrical shape” (Engelmann) of the plant body, in contrast to Echinocactus viridescens (= Ferocactus viridescens), of which this was originally a variety.
The English name Le Conte barrel cactus is sometimes applied to this species, but originally only referred to Ferocactus cylindraceus subsp. lecontei.
