Portuguese facheiro ‘torch’, vernacular name for many columnar cacti, primarily Pilosocereus pachycladus (compare Cereus ‘wax-light, taper’). Britton & Rose: “The generic name is from the common Brazilian one used for a number of the cacti, this one being called facheiro preto da Serra de Cannabrava [= Serra Canabrava]”.
