Etymology

Named for German botanist Friedrich Ritter (1898-1989), who collected the species in Arequipa, Peru. Cullmann: “This beautiful plant has been known and traded for years under the nomen nudum Eulychnia ritteri, and the magnificent white shaggy seedlings attract attention in many collections. It is hereby finally to be given the name of its discoverer, Friedrich Ritter, who is so deserving for his research into the cactus flora of Peru.”
