Etymology

Latin Alexbragiae genitive (possessive) form of Alexbraga (as a single word). Named for Brazilian cactus enthusiast Alexander “Alex” Braga Nascimento. (The genus was named for Eddie Esteves Pereira. The name Bragaia estevesii, published the same year, honors the same two persons.)

The original spelling alex-bragai is correctable to alexbragae under the articles 60.8 and 60.11 of the International Code of Nomenclature (ICN). It is often only partially corrected to alex-bragae. According to IPNI (personal communication, October 6, 2021) a proposal to change article 60.11 with regard to the hyphenation is being written.
