Latin nānus ‘dwarf’, in botanical Latin ‘short as compared with another taxon’ (Stearn, Botanical Latin. 3rd Edition. 1983). For the short plant body compared to Espostoa haagei (= Espostoa melanostele subsp. melanostele). Ritter (Kakteen Südamerika 4: 1447. 1981) described Espostoa haagei as 2-4 m high and erect, and Espostoa nana as 1-1.5 m high, old stems procumbent.
