Etymology

Latin lāna ‘wool’ + Latin ānŭlus ‘ring’ + Latin –ger (feminine –gĕra) ‘bearing’. For the white woolen ring on the edge of the diaphragm that seals the nectar chamber. Not “[d]im. of Lat. ‘ Ianius’ , butcher; and Lat. ‘-ger, -gera, -gerum’, carrying, bearing; perhaps for the somewhat strong central spines” (Eggli & Newton, Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004).
