Etymology

Greek krēmnos ‘cliff’ + Greek philos ‘loving, friend’. Hoxey (Bradleya 32: 38. 2014): “The epithet ‘cremnophila’ derives from the Greek ‘kremnos” [sic] for cliff and “-philus” for friend. This alludes to the exclusive cliff dwelling habitat preference of this taxon.” Compare Melocactus oreas subsp. cremnophilus.
