Etymology

Unknown. A local vernacular name? The species was described but not named by Robert Elias Fries in 1905, named Friesia umadeave but not described by Alberto Vojtěch Frič in 1930, and finally named and described as Echinocactus umadeave by Erich Werdermann in 1931. Since Fries remarked that the species looked similar to Echinocactus nidus (Latin nidus ‘nest’), there may be a connection with Spanish ave ‘bird’.
