Etymology

Latin Maechlerо̄rum ‘of the Mächlers’. Named for “Swiss cactus and Chile lover Wendelin Mächler, who has acquired invaluable knowledge during more than thirty years of field experience in Chile, and for his son Wendelin Mächler Jr., who died in the Chilean desert” (Walter). The original epithet maechleri (singular) is correctable to maechlerorum (plural) under article 60.8 of the International Code of Nomenclature. Under article 60.7 of the International Code of Nomenclature ä, ö, and ü must be transcribed as ae, oe, and ue.
