Greek pachyrrhizos ‘with thick roots’. Marshall: “Exactly resembling the type of the species [Epithelantha micromeris var. micromeris] but having enlarged, tuberous roots usually separated from the plant body by a narrow neck 1 to 3 cm long.” The epithet is sometimes corrected to pachyrrhiza (compare Opuntia pachyrrhiza).
