Etymology

Greek mikros ‘small’ + Greek meris ‘part’. Presumably for the small (“parvula”) plant body and the small tubercles (“tuberculis minimis”). The name of Engelmann’s Mammillaria micromeris contrasted with that of his earlier name Mammillaria macromeris (= Lepidocoryphantha macromeris), which was “intended to indicate the unusually large size of different parts of the plant, the tubercles, the spines, and the flowers” (Mem. Tour N. Mexico [Wislizenus]: 97-988. 1848).

Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004): “for the numerous small radiating spines”. Helmut Genaust (Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996): “for the small stem segments”.
