Cartago + Latin –ensis, geographical suffix. For the occurrence near Cartago, Costa Rica. The epithet is sometimes corrected to cartaginensis based on the Spanish demonym cartaginés or Latin Carthāgĭn(ĭ)ensis ‘Carthaginian’ (from Carthāgo, stem Carthāgĭn-).
