Named for German-American physician and botanist George Engelmann (1809-1884). Based on Engelmann’s Opuntia § Clavatae Engelm. (in Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts 3: 289, 302. 1856).
First mentioned by Backeberg in Blätt. Kakteenf. 1935(8): [1] and later in Blätt. Kakteenf. 1936(2): [3-7] as Opuntia subgen. Engelmannia.
At the rank of genus, Engelmannia is illegitimate as a younger homonym of Engelmannia A.Gray ex Nutt. (1840, Asteraceae), Engelmannia Klotzsch (1841, Euphorbiaceae) and Engelmannia Pfeiff. (1845, Convolvulaceae). In 1936 Knuth raised the subgenus to generic rank under the name Corynopuntia (Backeberg, Cactaceae 6: 3903. 1962).
